LISBON - BEST MUSIC CLUBS

The Portuguese capital has great music clubs that go from Indie Jazz and African Beats to American Retro Rock and up to Electronic Experiments. And some of these clubs have even been mentioned in The New York Times. Lisbon isn't just Fado anymore.

One of these clubs is the iconic Hot Clube de Portugal, a jazz hangout that has been around since the 1940s. In late 2009, however, the club burned down, having been moved and rebuilt a few doors down, to officially reopen in 2012. Hot Club Portugal came back with the same spirit it always had, with local and international live acts and fans that go anywhere from young adults to longtime regulars in their 40s and 50s.

If you wish to go to somewhere with more musical variety - with jazz, folk and ethno-groove, for instance - and great Neo-Portuguese cuisine, the Vinyl is the place for you. This wonderful place, around since 2012, is both a coffee shop and a restaurant.

Can the Can is a new restaurant that states "Canned Food Goes Gourmet, Fado Becomes Habitué". What does that mean? It means they present Fado and other Portuguese music in avant-garde forms, and that the cuisine consists of traditional tinned goods - like sardines and mackerels - presented in innovative and unexpected ways. As you may guess, Can the Can is having an incredible success with young musicians.

Then, there's B.Leza (photo), a bubblegum-pink warehouse that almost glows at night. A Neo-Industrial space with a crowd full of variety, from African Immigrants to Native Portuguese from all spectrums. Originally in a 18th Century Palace, B.Leza had to go to a more modest location in 2007. However, the carefully selected Pan-African Programming is still there, accompanied by a diverse fan base and some ocasional A-Listers. The entrance costs 10 Euros.

LISBON: EUROPE'S COOLEST CITY

Nightlife in Lisbon... well the main action starts in the Bairro Alto, where more than 250 appealing bars lined up in a web of streets between graffiti-plastered walls, taverns and local restaurants. Near the river, there's also the hip neighborhood around Cais do Sodré railway station.

Although Portugal is largely known for dried cod and taverns, the capital begins to claim for a range of restaurants. Seafood remains "a must", but the trend is for modern, sophisticated and affordable food.
 

But if you are passionate about art, in Lisbon you can find stylish leather goods, bold wine labels, interiors combining vintage with the latest designer pieces and spectacular buildings. Plus, a several of Museum are at your disposal, museums such the Gulbenkian Foundation, the Berardo Museum or the National Museum of Ancient Art.

So, as you can see, there's nothing boring about Lisbon!

 

THE ÁGUAS LIVRES AQUEDUCT

The Águas Livres Aqueduct was born out of necessity to supply the city of Lisbon with a new aqueduct, and of the personal taste of the King By John V megalomaniac projects. The result, a great work of Portuguese engineering of the eighteenth century with 65 meters high at some points, which allowed cross the valley on a nice walk with beautiful views. However, the authorities had to shut down access to the aqueduct in 1853 to prevent the criminal Diogo Albes throw up their victims over the viaduct after steal them. Today, only private visits are allowed.

LISBON AT NIGHT - DINNER AND FADO

The circuit continues to the centre of Lisbon, where the historic portuguese icons like Praça do Comércio, Rossio and Marquês de Pombal will be photographed by you. Enjoy the downtown and visit the most renowned shopping district of the city. Here you can see the contrast between modern and ancient: contemporary shops alongside neighborhood grocery stores.

Then it will be time for the highlight of the evening: a dinner to the accompaniment of traditional fado. Fado is currently a world wide known symbol of Portugal, being represented for many years in foreign countries by Amália Rodrigues, and more recently by Dulce Pontes, Mariza and Katia Guerreiro, among others. These nostalgic and melancholic songs are considered the ultimate expression of the spirit of Portugal: tinged with sadness and beauty.
