Hidden Portugal - special and forgotten places tourists don't know about (yet)

It is known Portugal is on everyone's wish list. World travel awards, high safety, Michelin stars and low cost of life makes it a wonderful travel destination. Now the film industry also has its eye in Portugal. According to this article, there are 5 hidden gems which may well be featuring in the next Hollywood productions.

The world’s oldest bookshop

Livraria Bertrand first opened its doors in 1732, in capital Lisbon. It was destroyed in the devastating earthquake of 1755 but it soon reopened in the heart of chic district Chiado. It remains in the same place until the present day. Its bookshelves are filled with old and new books. Its corridors are filled with city habitants and many many tourists, which like to visit the beautiful store.

Coimbra, students' city

This city sits between capital Lisbon and cosmo Oporto. Which makes it still somewhat out of the travel circuits and, therefore, very worthwile a visit. It has the second oldest university in Europe and many gothic buildings. The Santa Cruz Monestary holds the remains of the first two kings of Portugal and was built in 1131. Also, it is the only place in Portugal where you can listen to the university students singing a specific type of fado music.

The largest zip line in Europe

Pena Adventure Park is located in the North of Portugal, between Serra do Alvão and Peneda-Gerês. Here you can travel at 130 km/h at 150 meters high. Just imagine the view from the top! You can also visit Vila Real, the nearest large city. If you manage to get tired of the air and the view on the mountains...

The Algarve's Eye

The Algarve region is no hidden gem, since it was the first region to atract many tourists, on summer season, for its beaches. However, if you would like to escape the most crowded places, The Eye is one good (and breathtaking) place. It is a cave, located at the beach of Benagil and, well... the picture speaks for itself.

Luxurious Troia

This peninsula is linked to mainland by a narrow band of land coming from the Alentejo region. It is a luxurious area, with many hotels, villas and even a casino. It is also possible to arrive by boat, from the city of Setúbal. You may even have luck and see one of the Sado dolphins, a protected species native to this area.

If you look outside the obvious choices of Lisbon, Oporto and the Algarve, we are sure you won't be sorry. And these examples are just a few from everything Portugal has to offer.

A cultural agenda that helps to walk Coimbra

Coimbra Cultural Poster was born first as an agenda in internet and launches now maps to guide the city visitors.

First was born as the Coimbra cultural agenda, in 2012, and now materializes in products directed to those who visited the city. The Coimbra Cultura Poster (CCP) started was a facebook page to share concerts, expositions, theater plays and expositions in the city. Almost fie years and some thousands of followers after, the dynamizers of the project launch maps and cards to take advantage of the tourism growth.

Paulo Vale Marques, one of the initiative responsables, tells to PÚBLICO that the CCP “started to be a page to friends”. The page to a nearest circle grow “organically”, that is, with sponsored publications, and has actually more than 16 thousands of followers.
One of the explications to the accession may be the lack of coverage of the agendas of official entities. Paula Vale Marques affirms that still tried to get in touch with the county, but the City Hall answered that already had the Agenda7, a partnership project between the City Hall and the University of Coimbra that, despite having more than 400 entities in the “partners” list it doesn’t traduces in cultural activity in the city.

In spite of living the past three years in Lisboa, Paula always assured the actualization of the page Coimbra Cultural Postar without any financial reward, until start thinking in ab “way to monetize it”.
So she challenged Ana Fróis, architect and illustrator to create materials that framed themselves with the page. From that work flourished city maps, cards and cloth bags.
One of the objectives is to take advantage of the tourism growth. “We noticed that Coimbra has more people, not only foreign tourists, but also Portuguese”, affirms the responsible, who understands that the CCP materials are a way to “make the city more attractive, more interesting” to those who visit it.

In the product developing fase they noticed a certain absence of materials out of the typical map distributed in the touristic circles. “There is the county map but not alternative trails and the cards are from old times”, they said.
The bilingual CCP maps show not only the city street, but also propose ways to go through them. For now, in the launch date, it’s available a two-days tour suggestion through Coimbra, that stars in the left margin of the Mondego River and ends in the right one. A map with gardens is still stitched and others are in the gutter, one that follows the marks left by literature in the city and another by unique buildings.

Five Portuguese destinations among the "100 most valuable in the world"

Fátima (29.º), Guimarães (59.º), Braga (62.º), Sintra (89.º) and Coimbra (91.º). These are the Portuguese cities among the list Best Value City Index 2017, from Trivago. This ranking was based on over 175 million ratings made by travelers from around the world, combined with the average price of cities, to rank the most valuable destinations in the world for 2017.

In this value-for-money inventory, Mostar, a city of Bosnia and Herzegovina destroyed during the Balkan conflict and whose historic center and old bridge were classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2005, ranks first, followed by Novi Sad (Serbia) and Veliko Tarnovo (Bulgaria) - to complete the top ten destinations are Suzdal (Russia), Lviv (Ukraine), Eger (Hungary), Oradea (Romania), Pécs (Hungary), Safranbolu (Romania).

For countries with more entries in the list, Portugal comes in fifth place, together with Romania (which has two destinations in the top 10) and Russia (one destination in a fourth place). Italy leads (11 destinations), followed by Spain (8) and Hungary and Poland (both with 7).

Trivago's Best Value Index is created using an algorithm that combines Trivago Hotel Price Index (THPI) - which shows the average price of double rooms around the world - with the reputation of the accommodation. The opinions were gathered in over 200 websites available in Trivago. Only hotels with more than 50 ratings were considered.

http://www.travel-tailors.com/detalhado.php?i=397

Arriving here, after winding upwards on narrow roads that cut through wildflower meadows, it's gorgeous. When the car stops, silence falls, broken only by the whistle of the wind and the distante honking of geese. Victor Mineiro, the architect of these seven fantastically renovated cottages and adjoining restaurant, will appear. He brims with enthusiasm for a project he has spent more than a decade working on, since him and its partner Manuel Casal decided to breathe new life into the abandoned village.

THE MOST PHOTOGRAPHED SITES IN PORTUGAL #7 - PRAÇA OITO DE MAIO, COIMBRA

According to the website sightsmap.com, Portugal is one of the most photographed areas of the world.
We wondered if some of the photos are yours?

An historical location that blends beautifully with the rest of the city of Coimbra. Quite popular back in the days, it was given order, between 1392 and 1414, that this town square was to be enlarged and aligned, so that it could be the location of the Horse Parties, were ancient Portuguese games executed by horse were played. It also was the first public theatre of Coimbra, funded in 1835. And, up until 1838, it used to have a fountain with a statue of Samson in it, that was demolished because it got to a advance stage of degradation. In the same year, a new fountain  was build.

In 1834, the liberal forces of Duke of Terceira entered in Coimbra and marched over the town square. Years later, in 1874, along with the commemorations of the anniversary of that date, the place was officially renamed Praça Oito de Maio.

UNIVERSITY OF COIMBRA

The University of Coimbra was established in 1290, and is one of the oldest in the world. It has 8 faculties and approximately 20 000 students. On 2013 it was added to UNESCO's World Heritage List.

The University has a teaching hospital, which is known as a center of research with a broad range of clinical services and medical specialties; a huge central library, botanical gardens, stadiums and other sports facilities, an astronomical observatory, a publishing house, a private chapel, a theater, and many support facilities. It also has museums and other cultural organizations.

The General Library of the University is divided in two buildings: The Joanina Library, which has books before 1800, and the New Building, with more than a million books. The Joanina Library was built in the 18th century in the Baroque style by the Portuguese King João V, and named after him. It is a National Monument and has a priceless historical value, being one of the main tourist attractions among the older monuments belonging to the university.

The Botanical Garden of the University of Coimbra was founded between 1772-1774 and nowadays it has 13 hectares and shelters several species of birds and squirrels. It is considered one of the most beautiful gardens of Europe.

The university's academic traditions and institutions give life to the city. The students are usually lodged at the old "Republics" (student's residences), and celebrate some traditional festivities, such as "Queima das Fitas" (a celebration of the graduation's end, symbolized by the burning of the ribbons with the colors of each of the 8 faculties), the "Festa das Latas" (a homecoming), and they are usually accompanied by the Coimbra's Fado, which was traditionally sung in street serenades.

Testimunial: "Chuck and Diane Reers, Journey to Portugal, May 2013"

"PORTUGAL, a diamond in the rough. At least that was my last recollection from 8th grade geography & history classes. We quickly saw this beautiful country transformed into a highly polished gem, which resembled the Hope Diamond.
A last minute change of plans found us looking for a break after a med cruise out of Barcelona. We contacted Paula of Travel Tailors, and she instantly crafted a private tour that captured our interest and satisfied our travel budget.
Paula's custom tailor skills put together an interesting itinerary, covering the highlights of each place of interest. Professional guides, Marco Noivo and Susana Bras, blended in by contributed their expert historical knowledge and background. I can say, I never had such an interesting and exciting lecture in history! I remember Vasco da Gama, but I actually touched his tomb!
Sleeping and eating accommodations also exceeded my expectations. The local restaurants were cozy and provided the ambiance for a relaxing meal and light conversation..and the roasted suckling pig made each step of the way a memorable experience.
Paula, you and your expert staff are to be commended. Your team has made our trip to Portugal an interesting and memorable event that it will certainly bring us back in the future. I have already recommended friends to contact you, and will continue to do so in the future.
Please feel free to share our vacation success with whomever you wish, and should your travel plans bring you to Denver Colorado USA, please plan to spend some time together. Perhaps we can even plan for our next trip to Portugal.
Thanks again!"

Testemunial: "António Ottani, Journey to Portugal and Paris, January 2013"

"All the trip planning was excellent, which made it pleasant. It was all very well prepared and divided, which made us enjoy traveling from city to city. The New Year's Eve, that we spent at the Hard Rock Café was excellent!
The participation of the guides was essential, with special mention to Carlos, who accompanied us in Oporto, by his historical knowledge and professionalism. Since we traveled as a family and all together, we didn't have any problem entering or exiting Europe. The required documentation was only the passports and the interview was quick and calm.
The journey exceeded our expectations and we just have to thank you for your commitment and participation in all the planning and all the details."
